RV Converter, Inverter and Battery Repairs

Lights that dim, a battery that will not hold a charge or outlets that behave differently on shore power can point to separate parts of the RV electrical system. Start with what changed, then sort converter, inverter, battery and source-selection questions.

Converter, Inverter, Battery and Transfer Switch Are Different Jobs

A converter takes shore or generator AC power and supplies DC power while charging the house battery. An inverter does the opposite where installed: it changes stored DC power into AC for selected outlets or appliances.

A battery stores DC energy. A transfer switch selects between AC sources where the RV has one. These functions are separate, so a symptom that appears only on battery or only on shore power helps narrow the request.

The installed equipment and its model govern what can be checked or repaired. Labels and manuals matter more than guesses based on the coach brand alone.

ConverterChanges AC shore or generator power into DC and supports battery chargingNote whether 12-volt lights and charging fail only on shore power.
InverterChanges stored DC battery power into AC for selected circuits where installedNote which outlets or appliances work only with the inverter on.
BatteryStores DC power for house loadsNote battery type, age if known and whether voltage falls quickly.

What to Note Before Requesting RV Electrical Service

Keep the request factual and avoid opening panels or testing live wiring. The goal is to describe the symptom clearly enough for a safe, scoped evaluation.

  • Record the RV year, make and model plus any converter, inverter or transfer-switch labels you can read safely.
  • Describe what works on shore power, what works on battery and what changes when the generator runs, if equipped.
  • Note when the problem began and any recent battery, appliance or charging changes.
  • Use the contact page to request service for the RV power-system symptom.
